PEORIA, Ill. -- A tavern on Peoria's south-side was denied a 4 a.m. liquor license Tuesday night, mainly due to the increase in crime.

The city's liquor commission approved Kareena's Sports Bar for the 4 a.m. liquor license earlier this month.

The tavern, located on Southwest Adams Street, is eligible to extend its hours from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. because it is located in the correct zone.

However, the council voted unanimously against the license extension.

Councilwoman Denise Moore said longer hours for another establishment could lead to more problems in the community.

"I am not against that particular business, but right now the environment really is not conducive to adding another establishment open until 4 a.m. selling alcohol," Moore said. "It's just not. I think at a later date there may be better timing."

It is unknown when the issue will be brought to the floor again.
