He was born March 14 1922 in Table Grove, Ill. the son of Clarence Armand and Sarah Nellora Ross Hammond. He graduated from Table Grove High School in 1940. He married Betty Ferne Johnson on March 7, 1942 in San Antonio, Texas. She preceded him in death in December 3, 1995.
He is survived by two sons, Jay Carroll (Shari) Hammond of Phoenix, Ariz. and Charles Ross (Helen) Hammond of Winnemucca, Nev.; his daughter, Peggy Kay (Milo) Johnson of Buena Vista, Colo.; five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother, and two sisters.
Carroll served as TSgt. in the US Army Air Force Corp from 1940-1945 during WWII for the 430 AAF Base Unit, as a trained and skilled airplane mechanic.
He was stationed in San Antonio, Texas, Altus, Okla., Biloxi, Miss., and Liberal, Kansas. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Medal.
He worked as a machinist in set up and repair for Gale Products division of Outboard Marine Corporation for 37 years. He retired on July 31, 1982. After retirement he was employed by Midwest Photo for several years in maintenance and repair. He enjoyed traveling by car to Aviation Museums, helping others in need, and blessing his family and many friends with his love, care, and fun sense of humor. Carroll resided at 234 N. Seminary Street, in Galesburg for over 50 years and was a member of First Lutheran Church.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 am Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at First Lutheran Church. Rev. Pamela Marolla will officiate. Visitation will be 10:00-11:00 am Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with Military Rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285.
