Leona M. Hony, 84, of Manito, passed away at 1:50 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Mason City Area Nursing Home. She was born June 8, 1928 in Arcola, IL to Alonzo and Wanda (Gardner) Cook. She married Marion Hony Jr., on November 13, 1948 in Clinton, IL. They began their lives together in Chillicothe, IL, moving to Pekin and then Manito. He preceded her in death on April 5, 1971.
Mrs. Hony is survived by four daughters, Norma (Terry) Budke of Pekin, Diana (Norman) Budke of Manito, Gloria (Charles) Lovelace of Manito, Yvonne Faichney of Florida, one son, Michael (Dawn) Hony of Tampa, FL, seven grandsons; Sean Hony, Scott and Tim Thompson, Chris Lovelace, Jon and Daryn Hony and Ben Hony, several great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren and one great great step-grandchild. Also surviving are two sisters, Donna Lee of Charleston, IL, Charlotte (James) Appel of Chillicothe, IL and one brother, John (Millie) Cook of Charleston, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Lewis Hony, daughter, Brenda Hony, one brother, Robert Cook, brother-in-law Bob Lee and son-in-law Eric Faichney, three step-sisters and one step-brother.
Leona was the first woman bus driver for Forman School District, and later was a bus monitor for First Student and worked with Head Start. Leona was instrumental in bringing Girl Scouts to the Manito area and worked as a volunteer with the Forman Ambulance. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society, the United Methodist Church and its ladies group. She enjoyed working with Manito on the Move, helping with the senior meals and Emmanuel’s Warehouse.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Maas-Hurley Funeral Home in Manito with visitation two hours prior to the service. Burial will follow the services at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Revs. Cathy Clark and Tom Guengerich will officiate.
