David L. Hallowell Jr., 48, passed away at 3:07 a.m. Saturday January 5, 2013 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday January 8, 2013 at the Elias Funeral Home, an Elks ritual will be recited at 6:45 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Elias Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Cline officiating. Burial will follow the services at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Streator. Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Goluba, Scott Loeffel, Carol Jo Richards, Steve Wilkinson, Jack Porter, and Dean Salz.
David was surrounded by his devoted family throughout his resilient and courageous battle with lung cancer and as he proceeded to heavenly peace. David was born on November 20, 1964, the son of David and Judith (Kerestes) Hallowell Sr.. David attended local schools, graduated from Streator High School in 1982, and graduated from Lakeland Community College in 1984 with an Associates Degree in Communications.
David was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local #1.
David’s love was broadcasting and his personality was well known and loved at the Radio Group’s AM 1250 WSPL. His humble intellect and authentic voice blended for trustworthy information on the dial. David’s quick and unique wit added a never ending comedic hue to all things, great and small. Communicating the best news effectively and efficiently was a high priority for David and he worked diligently and endlessly for this cause.
David was always seen with his wife, Karie, while being an active member of the Elks Lodge #591. He moved through many chair positions, being installed as the Exalted Ruler of the Lodge in 2006. He was also a member of the Streator Eagles.
In addition, David’s love of music has been a lifelong passion. He performed in multiple bands since high school, wrote and produced his own music, and mastered many instruments. Most recently, David enjoyed solo performances at the Pines that were as appreciated by his listening audience as for himself. David adored music in all avenues, performing vocally, instrumentally, and listening. His knowledge of music was another humble gift.
He is survived by his devoted wife Karie (Amell) Hallowell, adoring daughters Ashley and Jasmin, Streator; his parents David and Judith Hallowell, Streator; two sisters Angela (Scott) Story-Loeffel , of South Portland, Maine, and Pamela Hallowell, Bloomington; nephew Austin David Goluba and nieces Rheagan Goluba, Samantha Story, Kasey (Anthony) DeBery, and Kim Loeffel. They will remember David as a loving husband, caring father, strong son, extraordinary brother and humorous uncle. Also surviving is his father in law Barry Amell of Streator, mother in law Marcia Amell of Streator, sister in law Angela (Paul) Goluba of Streator and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas and Alberta Kerestes, Clifford and Vivian Hallowell, and his brother Darren A. Hallowell.
