Alfred L. White, 81, of Petersburg, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Memorial Medical Cener in Springfield. He was born May 5, 1931 in Phoenix, IL, the son of Raymond and Nellie (South) White. Al married Carol Schmidt in Hazel Crest, IL on September 14, 1957.
Al is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter Cindy Lee (Scott) Wood of Island Lake; grandsons Scott Wood of McHenry and Kyle Wood of Island Lake; stepmother Ruth Wise of Greenville, MI; half-sister Linda Tedesco of Greenville, MI; half-brother Jesse Ray White of Gowen, MI; brother-in-law Bobby Sichling of Fremont, IN; brother-in-law Ronald Morris of Loveland, CO and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and three brothers.
Al served in the Army during the Korean Conflict for two years. He worked at Acme Steel in Chicago for 32 years. In addition, he was a volunteer firefighter in Hazel Crest, IL for 37 years. He and Carol moved to Petersburg where he worked for the Lake Petersburg Association for 9 years and for Hurley Funeral Home for 23 years.
Mr. White was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Free Church in Petersburg. He was a Life Member of the VFW Post #680871 and the American Legion. For many years, he volunteered at Sunny Acres Home, Lincoln’s New Salem State Historical Site, and Theatre in the Park.
Funeral service will be Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Free Church in Petersburg with the Rev. Don Winters officiating. Visitation will be Friday, February 22, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg and will continue Saturday from 10 am until time of service at the church. Military burial rites will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
