He was born October 13, 1922 in Galesburg the son of Anton N. and Anna Lundeen Walberg. He married Shirley Larsen in Galesburg on April 11, 1948. She preceded him in death on March 10, 2001. Gordon was wonderful in caring for his wife, Shirley, during her two year illness.
Surviving are one son, Christopher Lee Walberg of Chicago, Ill.; a daughter, Mindy S. Walberg of Galesburg and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dave Webster was also a loyal friend to Gordon. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Bernice Rose, LaVerna Olson and Eula Gummerson.
Gordon worked at Purington Brickyards in East Galesburg, Burlington Truck Lines, and later was Election Commissioner here in Galesburg, retiring in 1986.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1940 and attended Brown’s Business College. Gordon ushered for the premiere of Gone With the Wind at the Orpheum Theatre with his cousin, Andy Lundeen in 1939.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church where he was a lector and usher for many years.
Gordon served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne during World War II, arriving in Holland by glider during Operation Market Garden. He received the Purple Heart after being shot in Belgium. He rejoined his unit, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and later helped liberate a concentration camp in Wobbelin, Germany in 1945. He was a lifetime member of the VFW #2257.
Gordon was a 65 year member of the Galesburg Lions Club where he was a past president. He received the Melvin Jones Award and the Foundation Fellow Award. Gordon adored his wonderful friends in the Lions Club. The Lion members were always there for Gordon.
Gordon never missed a Chicago Cubs, Bears, or Bulls game on television. He attended 13 Cub Conventions with his family every January.
Gordon had a wonderful sense of humor and will be remembered for his personality, kindness, and generosity to others.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2013 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post#285. Rev. Pamela Marolla will officiate. Visitation will be 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery.
