Garland H. “Gary” Winner, 67, of Petersburg passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 in his home surrounded by his family. He was born May 11, 1945 in Springfield, the son of Harold and Gladys (Hickman) Winner. Garland married Marsha Hitchcock on January 15, 1967 in Oakford, IL.
Mr. Winner is survived by his wife Marsha, children Mike (fiancé Tammy) Winner, Becky (Todd) Bielic and Tom Winner, Grandchildren Lakyn and Zachary Winner and great-grandson Noah, Siblings Connie (Jessie) Oliver, Tim (Carolyn) Winner and Carol Thievagt. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers David and Greg Winner.
Garland graduated from Ashland High School and Western Illinois University and worked for the Illinois Secretary of State, retiring after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Petersburg United Methodist Church, Menard County VFW Post #6871, American Legion Post 32, Route 97 Crusaders Car Club and the Central Illinois Corvette Club. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and retired from the Illinois National Guard with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Funeral service will be Monday, March 11, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg with the Rev. John Vidakovich officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, March 10, 2013 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
