Vernon S. Avery, Jr.;Groveland - Vernon S. Avery, Jr., 63, of Groveland, passed away at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. He was born July 15, 1949, in Peoria to Vernon S. Sr. and Clara Irene (Ferguson) Avery. He married Regina L. Powell on May 29, 1993, in Groveland. Surviving are his wife, Regina Avery of Groveland, two daughters, Teresa (Johnny) Walker and Toni Avery, both of Peoria, his stepchildren, R. Adam Downs of Tremont and Leslie (Ronny Alvarez) Mays-Alvarez of Shabbona, Ill., 12 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, four brothers, Robert (Marlene) Avery of Waukesha, Wis., Gary (Millie) Avery of Bloomington, Steve (Debbie)Avery of Princeville and Roger Avery of East Peoria, and three sisters, Mary Davis of Peoria, Marsha (Ron) Weber of Mattoon, Ill., and Brenda (John) Moore of Peoria. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kimberly Avery in 2000, his parents, and one sister, Barbara. Vernon worked as an associate with Mitsubishi Manufacturing of America in Normal in production for 15 years until his retirement. He previously worked in the early 1980s as a manager in material handling at Caterpillar Inc. in East Peoria. He was a member of New Life Christian Church in Morton. Vernon enjoyed fishing, camping and NASCAR racing and loved St. Louis Cardinals baseball. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at New Life Christian Church in Morton, with Rev. Bob See and Randall Powell officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton, and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Hirstein Cemetery in Morton. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, 311 W. John H. Gwynn Jr. Ave., Peoria, IL 61605.
