Thomas A. Moran;Morton - Thomas A. Moran, 87, formerly of Morton, passed away at 12:10 a.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Pinecrest Community in Mount Morris, Ill. He was born March 13, 1926, in Galesburg to Frederick R. and Beulah M. (Willett) Moran. He married Phyllis M. Read on July 9, 1945, in Denver, Colo. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Moran of Morton, three daughters, Sherrill (Pat) O’Brien of Edelstein, Nancy (George) Poe of Mount Morris and Susan (Perry) Sundell of Manito, eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mary Morse of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Moran, his parents, and one brother, Kenneth Moran. Thomas was a 1944 graduate of Galesburg High School. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. Thomas was a depot agent for the Santa Fe Railroad for 18 years and the traffic manager for Continental Grain in Bartonville, retiring in December 1988. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Morton, where he served as a deacon. He became an ordained deacon in the Peoria Diocese in May 1992. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Raho Council 4194 in Morton and the Transportation Club of Peoria, where he served as past president. He was an avid golfer, a bowler and a life-long Cubs fan. He also was a Boy Scout troop leader and served as volunteer Assistant Fire Chief in Benson for 10 years. Thomas was a loving husband and father. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Morton, with Fr. Mark DeSutter officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton, where a recitation of the rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Further visitation will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Galesburg. Memorials may be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 225 E. Greenwood St., Morton, IL 61550 or to the Pinecrest Community, 414 S. Wesley Ave., Mount Morris, IL 61054.
