PEORIA – Vera Simon, 94, of Peoria, passed away peacefully at 10:20 a.m., Sunday August 25, 2013, at the Apostolic Christian Skylines Home, where she was a resident for the past 4 years.;Vera was born September 4, 1918, in Toluca to Theodore and Antonia (Pisciatelli) Bartolomucci, which was shortened to Bartolo. The Bartolo’s immigrated from Calascio, Italy, where Theodore found work in the coalmines of Toluca. After the coalmines shut down, the family relocated to Peoria.;After graduating from Peoria Central High School with a focus in business, Vera worked for Kay Jeweler’s in Peoria and later transferred to Kay Jeweler’s in Long Beach, California. It was there she wed childhood friend, Naval Seaman 1st class Earl T. Simon on June 22, 1944. Upon completion of Earl’s tour in the Navy, the couple moved back to Peoria to start a family. Earl preceded her in death on August 24, 1995.;She was also preceded in death by her son, Arnie Simon, at the age of 44 on April 23, 1997, her brother, Vincent Bartolo, sister Edna Fox, and granddaughter, Keiya (Laurie Winkler) Dancer.;Surviving children are daughter, Jo Anne Winkler of Peoria, and son, Gary Simon of Lake Zurich, Ill. Surviving grandchildren are Shelley of Peoria, Tim and Lindsay Winkler of Chicago, Kara Amador of Florida, Brock Simon of Lake Zurich, Ill, and Tony Simon and Kellen Linderman of Mundelein, Ill.;Vera graduated from St. Bernard’s grade school in 1933 and was a devoted member of St. Bernard’s parish for over 70 years. Vera’s outgoing, truly genuine personality was the key to her achieving top furniture and appliance sales awards for Cohen Furniture Company for 28 years before retiring.;Vera will be remembered by her positive outlook on life, her willingness to help others in need with no expectation of payback, her strong Christian values, and her undying love for her family.;She will be truly missed and never forgotten by all whom she touched.;Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 31, 2013, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. Msgr. Stanley Deptula will officiate. Visitation will be from 9-10:30 a.m., prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Peoria.
