WEST PEORIA – Merlin E. “Matt” Mathewson Sr., 87, of West Peoria passed away at 4:48 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at his residence.;Matt was born November 15, 1926, in Peoria County to LeRoy Earl and Lelah Mae (Smith) Mathewson. He married Ardine Kneer on May 12, 1945, in Gulf Port, Miss. She survives.;He is also survived by five sons, Robert (Kathy) Mathewson of LeRoy, Ill., William Mathewson of Marquette Heights, John (Chris) Mathewson of Dunlap, Merlin “Rocky” (Carol) Mathewson of West Peoria, and Michael (Barb) Mathewson of Palm Shores, Fla., one daughter, Christine (Carey) Wolstenholm of Naperville, 17 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren.;He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, one brother, and one granddaughter, Dawn Mathewson.;Matt was a World War II Navy veteran. He received a business degree from the University of Texas and a degree in interior design from the University of Chicago. He was a construction salesman and an interior designer until his retirement in 1980.;He was a member of American Legion Post #979 in Bartonville and a former member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Peoria.;Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. No further services will be held. Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation.;In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to a charity of the donor’s choice.;Tributes and condolences may be submitted to www.wrightandsalmon.com
