The Houston Astros drafted Brandon Wikoff today in the 5th Round of the 2009 MLB Draft. After leading Limetone to the state baseball finals in 2005 and 2006, Wikoff has starred at shortstop at the University of Illinois for the past three years.
Jim Mattson interviewed Wikoff over the phone minutes after his selection. Wikoff watched the draft in Madison, Wisconsin where he's playing this summer for the Madison Muskies.
Jim- Where were you for the draft today?
Brandon- I watched here in Madison in the clubhouse. We had a few guys here and my Dad. We were watching the Draft Tracker on the computer...my Dad saw my name and started yelling and then it got pretty crazy. Just a really exciting moment.
Jim- Your reaction to Houston and the 5th round?
Brandon- The 5th round was a little higher than I thought...so that was good. I was really happy about that and about the Astros. Houston had scouted me and talked to me quite a few times so I was not too suprised by the Astros.
Jim- Three years ago, when you were undrafted out of high school, I remember you telling me you were going to play pro ball. You had no doubt. Was not being drafted out of Limestone extra motivation for you?
Brandon- No, not really. I understood the business of the draft and knew my size was going to be questioned. But I knew if I went to the Illini and played well, I would get my chance. So it did not bug me...I just knew I had to work extra hard to prove myself. So, today is special. I am where I belong.
Jim- Anyway to summarize the emotion of today?
Brandon- Just really, really exciting. Truly a dream come true. Something I've wanted since I was a little boy.
Jim- What's next?
Brandon- Talk to the Astros in a couple days and hopefully get started with my career.
