New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter has announced that 2014 will be his final season.

The 13-time all-star shortstop posted the announcement on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

In the letter he wrote, "the 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball."

During his 19-season career, Jeter has led the Yankees to five World Series titles, and was named the AL rookie of the year in 1996.

Jeter has five gold gloves and 3,316 hits and one more season to build on his success.

The future hall of famer turns 40 in June.
