Tyler Brown led Illinois State with a career-high 26 points and Jackie Carmichael recorded his eighth double-double of the season, as the Redbirds (16-9, 8-6 MVC) defeated conference rival Drake (13-12, 6-8) Wednesday evening on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.

Brown has now scored 20 or more points in three-straight games for the Redbirds and was a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. Carmichael scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds, which made him the first ISU player to grab 20 or more rebounds in a game since Anthony Slack pulled down 20 against Creighton in 2008. ISU out-rebounded Drake by a margin of 45-23, and shot a season high of 90.3 percent (28-for-31) at the free-throw line.

The Redbirds jumped out to a 10-2 lead at the 15:43 mark, thanks to a 7-0 run capped off by John Wilkins, which forced Drake to take its second timeout of the first half. Carmichael later scored six straight points for the Redbirds, extending their lead 16-6.

Drake answered back by cutting the lead to 16-8 at the 11:34 mark after a layup by Jeremy Jeffers, but missed their next five shots as ISU extended the lead to 21-8. Despite the Bulldogs 10-2 run over 1:46, led by Aaron Hawley’s second three-pointer of the half, the Redbirds continued to hold onto the lead.

Drake cut the ISU lead to 25-24 just after the final media timeout of the first half with a three-pointer by Jeffers at the 4:13 mark and a pair of free throws by Rayvonte Rice. Hawley later tied the game with 1:46 remaining in the first half at 28-28, after connecting on his third three-pointer of the half. A pair of free throws from Brown gave ISU a slim two-point lead at 30-28 heading into the half.

Jon Ekey led the Redbirds with seven points at the start of the second half and with the score at 36-33 in favor of ISU, the Redbirds went on an 11-2 run capped off by a jumper by Brown to extend the lead to 47-35. ISU led by its largest margin of the game at 52-39 after a three-pointer by Brown and cruised to a 64-53 victory.

The Redbirds return to action Saturday, Feb. 11, as they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on the Northern Iowa Panthers. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CST at the McLeod Center.
