NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State forward Jackie Carmichael scored a season-high 21 points and added six rebounds to lead Illinois State to a 75-51, non-conference victory over Bethune-Cookman (2-4) Sunday afternoon on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.
For the fourth time this season the Redbirds had four players finish with double figures in points. Jon Ekey finished the contest with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Tyler Brown also dropped in an additional 14 points. Illinois State's 64.3% shooting set a new ISU shooting percentage record at Redbird Arena.
In the first half, the Wildcats opened up a perfect 4-for-4 from the field to jump out to an early lead. Both teams traded baskets before Ekey's three-point field goal at 9:31 of the half put the Redbirds ahead for good. Ekey's trey was part of a 25-5 run for ISU to finish the half.
Illinois State shot exceptionally well in the first half, shooting 12-for-18 from the floor, including 6-for-9 from behind the three-point line. Brown had 11 first-half points to lead the Redbirds, Carmichael grabbed four rebounds, while also adding 10 first-half points.
For Bethune-Cookman, Adrien Coleman led the Wildcats with six points and three first half rebounds.
The Redbirds pulled away in the second half behind an additional 11 second-half points for Carmichael. Nic Moore chipped in career-high seven assists to lead the team, including a thundering alley-oop pass to Ekey early in the half. The Redbirds continued their strong shooting going 15-for-24 (62.5%) in the second half, while also shooting 4-for-8 (50%) from behind the three-point line in the half.
Illinois State dominated the glass, outrebounding the Wildcats, 31-18, and the Redbird defense held Bethune-Cookman to a 40 percent shooting effort.
Coleman led Bethune-Cookman with 12 points and five rebounds on the contest and the was the only Wildcat in double figures.
