A pair of Illinois State soccer players were honored by the Missouri Valley Conference for their performances in the Redbirds’ 4-1 win at Indiana State last Friday. Sophomore Anna Stinson was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week and freshman Rachel Tejada earned Newcomer of the Week honors.
Stinson led ISU with a pair of goals over the Sycamores to raise her season total to four. The Kalamazoo, Mich., native gave Illinois State a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, and then capped the Redbird offensive effort by netting her second goal in the 65th minute. On the season, Stinson’s four goals are tied for fourth in the Valley and her six assists are second-best in the league.
Tejada tallied three more points in the win over Indiana State by scoring a goal and providing an assist. Tejada found the back of the net for the fourth time in her last three games when she scored the eventual game-winner just two seconds before the halftime whistle. The Troy, Ill., native picked up her third point of the match when she assisted a goal in the 59th minute. With Friday’s effort, Tejada now ranks fourth nationally with 16 goals and is sixth in the nation with 37 points.
The Redbirds will return to the pitch Sunday, Oct. 23, when they host nationally-ranked Milwaukee at Adelaide Street Field for a 1 p.m. contest. The match with feature two of the top five scorers in the country in Tejada and the Panthers’ Sarah Hagen, who leads the country in goals per game (1.286) and points per game (2.93).
