NORMAL, Ill. – Jordan Threloff recorded his first-career double-double to help Illinois State defeat Norfolk State, 68-36, Sunday afternoon on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. The Redbirds improved to 7-3 in non-conference play, and the Spartans dropped to 7-5.
Jackie Carmichael set a Redbird Arena and career record with 14 made free throws. Carmichael led Illinois State with 20 points, while Threloff contributed with a career-high 11 points and 13 rebounds. Anthony Cousin also scored in double figures with 10 points and had a game-high five assists. John Wilkins recorded a game-best four steals.
The Redbird defense held Norfolk State to the lowest shooting percentage in the history of Redbird Arena. The Spartans were 10-for-46 from the floor for a 21.7 shooting percentage. ISU limited Norfolk State to 21 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Chris McEachin led the Spartan offense with 10 points and six rebounds. Marcos Tamares contributed seven points and three rebounds.
Illinois State went on an early 11-3 run to take a 13-8 lead and held Norfolk State without a basket for five minutes in the first half. Carmichael led ISU with 14 points and four rebounds in the first half, and Illinois State led 28-18 at halftime.
In the second half, the Redbirds went on a 19-1 run with 6:10 remaining, capped by a Cousin jumper to give ISU a 56-28 advantage.
Illinois State returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 20 when the Redbirds host Arkansas-Little Rock. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
