Some former Cubs and Cardinals will put the gear on and their game faces one more time on Saturday Night in Normal. The Corn Crib will host State Farm Legends Game. Names like Andy Van Slyke and John Tudor Bob Dernier and Bill Buckner will play.
On Friday they reunited for a reception and swapped stories.
Former Cardinal Tito Landrum said, "Hatfields and McCoys."
That's how Landrum describes one of the best rivalries in baseball.
Landrum said, "I saw hats that were actually split in half, one side Cardinals, one side Cubs. We could have been in last-place and they could have been on next-to-last-place, but when you played each other it was like it was for first-place."
Former Cub Keith Moreland said, "The first time I played in a Cubs-Cardinals game at Busch Stadium I went, "Wow, look at all the blue here. We have as many people here as we have in Wrigley." I started out understanding pretty quickly that it was as important as any series in baseball."
Its an atmosphere that's hard to beat.
Landrum said, "You've got the bleacher bums. I was Tito Tomatohead. I've got to tell you there were some great comedians out there. Sometimes I'd have to hold my laughter back so I could concentrate and not listen to those people.
There have been many classic games between the two teams. And every player has their own favorite for their own reasons.
Former Cub Turk Wendell said, "My most memorable Cubs-Cardinals game was my major league debut. Might have been the game where Ozzie Smith sealed his fate into Cooperstown. I think he was 4-for-4 with a couple doubles."
One of the best all-time might have been on June 23, 1984, at the Friendly Confines.
Former Cardinal coach and current Cornbelter Manager Hal Lanier said, "We had a lead in the 9th inning, a 3-run lead and Bruce Sutter came in, the closer."
Former Cub Bob Dernier said, "Sandberg had a career kind of day, hit two homers, both of them to tie the game. The first in the 9th and then in the 11th. And both of them were off Bruce Sutter, which made it pretty unique."
Moreland said, "That is the best baseball game I ever played in and it just happened to be Cubs and Cardinals."
For some of the guys playing in tonight's Legends Game its been over 20 years since they've played in a Cubs-Cards game and they all agree that the goal is to stay healthy. But if the score is close late in the game those competitive juices will start flowing and the Corn Crib will feel like Wrigley Field or Busch Stadium.
Lanier said, "Hopefully no one is throwing that hard and maybe we can squeeze home a run and have a Cardinal victory."
Former Cardinal Andy Van Slyke said, "We'll have fun with it. There might be some knock-down pitches. But these guys don't throw hard enough for it to hurt so why move."
Landrum said, "You'll see some guys getting their uniforms dirty out there. Bob Dernier will probably be one of them."
Dernier said, " I've got the scenario. I want to be on second base and I want Keith Moreland hitting with two outs and it shouldn't be any problem from there."
