For Karen Stupples juggling a career and a family is par for the course. A member of the LPGA Tour since 1999, Stupples is in Springfield this week playing in the State Farm Classic.
While Karen works on her game at the driving range her husband, Bobby Inman, drives their 3 year-old son Logan to a nearby daycare center. The service is made available free of charge to LPGA families.
"Its huge for us," said Stupples, the 2004 Women's British Open champion. "As most mothers know you really don't want to be separated too long from your kids. To have that right here on site is really terrific. We can take him there in the morning, I can play my golf, I can go back and pick him up. I have the best of all worlds."
Inman says Logan gets something out of it too.
"Logan gets to learn how to go to school, learns how to take care of himself. They teach him certain things and then we get a little time out to do our job on the golf course. it's a big bonus for us," said Inman.
There are just under a dozen members of the LPGA Tour with young children. Each week, in each tour city, the LPGA finds a place where their kids can be comfortable so the golfers can be comfortable on the course.
That's Bardine May's job. She's the LPGA's director of child care.
"We pull into town with our truck. This week our truck got here from New Jersey late Monday night at 10 o'clock. We unloaded at 10 and we were open Tuesday morning and it looked like a child care center," said May, whose been coordinating the LPGA's day care operation for 7 years.
May also has a full-time assistant and arranges for two volunteers at each tour stop to help.
The LPGA even transports its own toys and changing tables.
Golfer and mom Stephanie Louden is grateful for the service.
"I couldn't do my job and play golf and travel without this daycare," said Louden. "It really allows me and my husband to come out here and work and do what we love to do and have him in a great atmosphere with wonderful people and his friends every week."
Golf might be a career but being a parent is a full-time job.
