PEORIA, Ill. -- A Peoria man is joining a nationwide campaign to bring attention to a disturbing trend in our justice system.
The number of people who are wrongfully convicted is reportedly in the hundreds.
One of them is Peorian Christopher Coleman.
Coleman was recently exonerated after spending 19 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
He says his life would have been a hopeless pit if not for his family, faith and an expert legal team.
Coleman says behind bars he was even getting support from surprising places.
"Even the victims of this crime," recalls Coleman. "This horrible crime, their own family members walked up to them and was telling them, 'Hey it wasn't him. It wasn't him.' "
Christopher Coleman's long prison term came to an end two months ago. Now he shares his story, exclusively with News 25.
"Finally Free" airs Wednesday night at 10 on News 25 Nightside.
