Thursday Illinois firefighters honored their own for their bravery and service. Hundreds gathered in Springfield for the 18th Illinois Fallen Firefighter Memorial ceremony.

The Duty Death Gold Badge was awarded to the families of the nine firefighters who died during or because of the performance of their duties.

Thirty-six recognition awards were presented. Pekin Fire Department Engineer David Morris was one of seven firefighters selected for acts of bravery or heroism during 2010.

"This year, with nine firefighters dying in the line of duty, we much never forget their sacrifice" said Quinn.

In closing the ceremony, the Illinois State Fire Marshal quoted Abraham Lincoln as saying the only thing more precious than creating a life...is saving a life.
