PEORIA, Ill. -- With one of America's peak grilling holidays coming up this week, officials are encouraging meat lovers to grill safely on the Fourth of July.
The state fire marshall recommends grilling in an open area, away from houses, garages, and crowds. Experts advise removing grease buildup from your grill, to prevent unexpected flames from flaring up.
Wendy Hauk, who works at Haddad's food cart in downtown Peoria, recently shared another safe-grilling secret. Wendy said, "We throw some extra ice in it, and try and keep everything shut, unless it's necessary to open it."
Experts at the U.S. Department of Agriculture say, amid temperatures higher than 90 degrees, food should sit out no longer than one hour before cooking.
