PEORIA, Ill -- Some area students got a chilly lesson on the ice today, as the Peoria Riverman hosted their Second Annual School Day.

Students were treated to a hockey game and challenged to trivia questions on topics such as geography, history and math.

One teacher called the event a valuable alternative to traditional field trips.

Mr. Tony Griffin, a 5th grade teacher at Heyworth Elementary said of the game, "I hope they learn something, educationally, obviously you want to do that. You also want to make sure they have fun, let's face it. These are the things that kids are going to remember all their lives. They're going to remember this more than they remember what they did on workbook page 62 in the classroom."

Almost 7,000 students and fans were at today's game, which is almost twice the number that came out last year.
