Springfield- Governor Quinn has activated the Illinois National Guard to support flood-fighting and life safety missions in southern Illinois.
Tuesday, the state's State Emergency Operations Center was opened to coordinate state and local efforts to deal with the southern Illinois flooding.
The Mississippi River at Chester Illinois is at 10 feet above flood stage. And, in Gale, Illinois, across the Mississippi River from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, reports say every road leading in and out of the small town are flooded.
Gale residents were forced to climb on hillsides to get away from the water and out of town.
"We know we have to be ready for this flood, its very very serious. We want everyone to be aware of what's coming our way. We can handle this, we are the people of Illinois and nothing, nothing can defeat us." said Governor Quinn.
State officials report that more than 210,000 sandbags have been sent to southern Illinois...along with two inmate crews from the Illinois Department of Corrections, barricades and generators.
