COAL CITY, Ill. -- The only two elephants in Illinois could soon be moving out of the state.

The Niabi Zoo in Rock Island County has two elephants, Babe and Sophie. Alan Roocroft, a zoo consultant hired by the county board, is calling for the Asian elephants to be moved because of their age and the condition of their winter quarters at the zoo.

"It's when the winter months set in and they have to be more and more in a small room, a large animal like that doesn't do very well," Roocroft says.

The consultant recommends the elephants be moved together. An official of the Peoria Park district says while the Peoria Zoo has an Africa exhibit, moving the elephants here is not an option.
