The soon-to-be Sheraton hotel in downtown Peoria is causing some union controversy. They have hired outside construction workers under scale for the renovation project.

The West Central Illinois Building and Construction Trades Council held a labor mass demonstration today. Members say it's important to hire laid off local workers-especially during an economic recovery.

Todd Dotson with the Painter's District Council 30 said, "They're out of state and that's our objective. We want to protect our standards and let them know-although we appreciate their investment in Central Illinois, we want them to invest in Central Illinois workers. When we have people coming in from out of state at well below the salary, we choose to notify the public."

The Four Points by Sheraton will replace the Holiday Inn City Centre.

Local workers have been hired for the other two hotel projects in downtown Peoria.
