For one local school, two new classrooms will also serve as a storm shelter to protect students and staff during severe weather.
Peoria Academy hosted a celebration Tuesday evening not only to welcome people back to school, but also to show the completion of two recently built classrooms.
And everyone had a chance to meet the new principal, who says the unique rooms are keeping kids safer.
"Both rooms- 5th grade classrooms- one is a new science-math room and the other is an English-history room," said Brendan Sheerin, Head of Peoria Academy," and they both also serve as out storm shelter. They have re-enforced walls and re-enforced roof. "
School officials are also helping the 5th grade students better prepare for the technology-based world by giving the kids notebook computers.
Tuition for the independent school is just under $6300 a year.
