PEORIA, Ill. -- This year, the names of 320 fallen officers were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial located in Washington, D.C. coinciding with National Police Memorial Day.

Here in Peoria, officers and family members gathered to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Police Chief Steve Settingsgaard said, while it has been years since a local officer was killed in the line of duty, it is important to take time to remember the fallen and their families left behind.

"It is a reminder and a refresher, especially for the younger officers, those that have never experienced a death in the line of duty to see what it means for those that have been through it," said Chief Settingsgaard.

Chief Settingsgaard said the annual event was especially humbling today, as five generations were present to honor their fallen officer.
