U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray Lahood is in town supporting the Peoria YMCA's Invest in Youth Scholarship fund.

The Transportation Secretary was the key note speaker, telling guests how he used to play basketball at the old Y.

The President of the Y hopes to raise around 60-thousand dollars for scholarships. The money will be used TO help families who are struggling participate in YMCA childcare, day camp and at-risk youth programs.

YMCA C.E.O. And President Don Chonowski said, "With the funding cuts we've experienced for youth program-as well as other non-profits-the programs then, to continue to operate them, it's been a tremendous to be able to raise funds and have ray to help us do this."

Despite the loss in funding, the Y does not turn any child away who is in need regardless of the parent's ability to pay.
