PEORIA, Ill. -- This year's annual Race for the cure had special meaning for a local woman.

Donna Shipp began participating in the race after her own experience with breast cancer more than a decade ago and May 11 is also her birthday.

Shipp said she feels overwhelmed by the love and support from people.

"Eleven years ago was my first race, I had been newly diagnosed, and I was the last one to come through the line with the police cars behind me. But I did the race, I told myself I would make it and here I am,” said Shipp.

She and fellow breast cancer survivor Sandra Powell say there is life after the disease. They add taking care of yourself is important.

Shipp is now 55 years old.
