Demonstrators gathered in Peoria Monday to urge federal lawmakers to save funding for Community Action Agencies. Budget proposals threaten to cut funding in half.
In 2009, 1 in 10 men, women, and children received emergency food from an Illinois food bank. However, Recent proposals have aimed at cutting Community Services Block Grant funding which helps agencies provide services like emergency food and housing assistance, child care and job training. Demonstrators argue the cuts need to be more evenly distributed.
"We just want to make sure that if there are going to be cuts that it's fair and that it's fair and across the board. We don't want to have only our programs being singled out for cuts. So if we're all going to share in the pain I think it has to be fair but at the same time we want to make sure that we do it in a way that is wise and and is compassionate particularly for families that are struggling." said President and CEO of IACAA, Dr. Dalitso S. Sulamoya
The group will also make stops in Rockford, Waukegan, Joliet and Chicago.
