SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- A 16-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly stealing a copper sword from a statue atop the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield.
Police say the three foot long copper sword was snapped off at the handle sometime between September and early November.
Acting on a Crimestoppers tip, authorities apprehended the teen Tuesday. They say the boy admitted to grabbing the sword during a visit, causing it to come loose and fall to the ground, breaking into two pieces.
In a panic, he says, he threw the sword into a wooded area behind the Sangamon Center. Upon further questioning he allegedly admitted that, instead, he had hidden the remainder of the sword in a broken down van.
Both pieces of the sword have been recovered.
The suspect faces charges of theft and criminal trespass from a state-supported property.
