On March 20th, Tazewell County voters will be asked to choose between two Republican candidates for County coroner.
Carl Powell is the incumbent, named to the post by the County Board last November, after the retirement of Dennis Conover. Powell, a retired Pekin Police Lieutenant and EMT, had been Deputy Coroner to Conover for two years.
"I bring the civil and criminal background from the Police department. I have a bachelor's degree in management. I came to the Coroner's office in 2009 and worked for Dennis Conover for two a a half years," said Powell. "In that he kind of groomed me in the talking to people aspect, in such that we handle people different in the Coroner's office compared to the police department. We do a lot of service calls in the police department, to help people out, but in the Coroner's Office, it's all service calls. Because, people, it's the worst days in someone's life when we come to call. We help them in that matter, but we also believe that we need to investigate those deaths in the county to get the true cause and manner of death."
He is opposed by Dr. Jeff Baldi of Morton, a retired dentist, and also a retired United States Air Force Colonel, who last commanded the 182nd Medical Group in Peoria.
"I have an education which has led me into a forensics group of experiences," said Dr. Baldi. "I think I can bring some professionalism. I have been a health care provider for 28 years, retired U-S Air Force colonel, taking care of patients, as well as taking care of the troops I'm with, so I feel I've a heightened level of compassion which I can share with the citizens, and it's certainly something the citizens of Tazewell County deserve".
There is no candidate from the Democrat party running for Coroner in Tazewell County.
