Oskaloosa, Iowa -- An family, who we are not naming, found a big bone in the backyard...just under the dirt.
When we say "big bone", we mean a really big bone. This is a femur of a mammoth. There's a reason Mammoths are called that. The knee bone is the size of a soccer ball.
So, homeowner John called for the pros, and a dig team from the University of Iowa showed up...and found a lot more bones.
Thirty of them, --vertebrae, rib bones even toes the size of walnuts!
The prehistoric find has created some decidedly modern problems.
John won't give out his last name because he's worried uninvited strangers might dig up his yard.
Then there's a question of what to do with the mammoth bones.
Every family has some skeletons in their closet, but John is getting enough for a room addition.
So far, he's planning on keeping them as a souvenir of Oskaloosa's first residents....
