Mac and Mac's Pick: The ugliest rat in New York

They say the rat population in New York City is about one per resident, and it seems a lot of them live in the subways.

Which is why the transit workers union held a contest to find the subway's ugliest rat. The picture is worth a thousand moans. Michael Spivak, who took this photo, won the contest.

The picture is blurred, because the rat is diseased. You don't want to see it. All of this is one way the transit workers are trying to publicly shame the transit authority into do something.

Refuse collection has been increased, but transit workers want personnel in place to keep it totally clean. Since the rats remain, so too will the contest. The next winner gets a $500 gift card to a camera store.
