The University of Minnesota has the "golden gophers" as their team name. In Viola Minnesota, the residents have "Gopher Count Days"
"Gopher Count Days" has been going on since the 1870's. It features a parade through town with bands and floats. But, being honest, the Gophers are such pests in Minnesota there's a bounty on their little heads.
Trapper Michael Junge has been catching gophers for twenty years. For every pair of front paws, he gets three dollars. Michael freezes the gopher feet until he decides to turn them in for their bounty.
In December, his freezer was looted and nearly $5,000 in gopher feet were swiped! Eventually, the trail led to Tina Marie Garrison and Junior Lee Dillon, mother and son, who had --as it turns out-- turned in nearly $5,000 in gopher feet.
They've been arrested and charged with Gross misdemeanor. Junge has added a lock to his freezer.
