The Peoria Orchid Society will again be at Luthy Botanical Gardens on October 3rd to repot the gardens orchids from 1:30 to 3 PM. Periodic repotting is necessary because the potting media that the orchid grows in breaks down and no longer drains properly. In nature, orchids grow on trees, rocks or in loose decomposing ground litter that drains well. Most cultured orchids are potted up in a pine or fir bark mixture that must be replaced in a year or so due to the mix becoming tighter. This happens because they are removed from natural events that would provide channels to keep the growing media open around their roots. Orchids as whole like some air circulation around the roots.
Come and watch the repotting. Feel free to ask questions. Orchid repotting mix will be available from the club.
