A dependable sign of mid-August is the blooming of surprise lillies, also known as voodoo lillies and magic lillies. After dense spring foliage goes fades into dormancy and no sign of the flowers all through the rest of spring and summer up until August, then these beautiful blooms rapidly arise from otherwise barren garden to put on a welcome display during dry and hot August.

I saw some of these on my morning run and actually stopped to see if they were real - absolutely gorgeous. Now I know what they are - thanks for the great picture and info!
