Photographed on my garage door frame in September of 2011 is a Phasmatodea or Stick Bug (sometimes called a Walking Stick). This one was about 4 1/2" in length and resembled an oak tree branch from which it must have fallen. It really stands out against the white painted wood frame.
From Wikipedia - The ordinal name is derived from the Ancient Greek φάσμα phasma, meaning an apparition or phantom, and refers to the resemblance of many species to sticks or leaves. Their natural camouflage can make them extremely difficult to spot.
