The Chillicothe Barbarians rugby football club took 3rd place in the Illinois Youth Rugby Association Tier 2 state playoffs on Memorial Day 2013 with a thrilling 19-14 comeback victory over the Renegades of the Downers Grove area. Down 14-0 at halftime, the Barbarians bounced back with a try by Chris Bryant and conversion by Adam Reginald to close to 14-7. Kyle Fouts added another try to close the gap to 14-12. Chris Bryant scored his second try of the day, and Adam Reginald added a conversion kick to take the lead 19-14. The Barbarians held off a valiant last surge by the Renegades as time expired, holding on to win a nail biter.
Chillicothe was beaten by top-seeded Fenwick on Saturday, 27-15, but bounced back for the victory two days later.
This is the third time in four years the Barbarians have made it to the state championships and the fourth straight year making the playoffs. In both 2010 and 2011 Chillicothe won the Tier 3 state championship before moving up to Tier 2 in 2012. In 2012, the Barbarians were upset in the first round of the Tier 2 playoffs by eventual champion Lake Forest, who won back-to-back titles in Tier 2 on Monday after beating Fenwick in the title game.
Chillicothe finished the 2013 season with a 6-2-1 combined league and playoff record, with their only losses coming to eventual champion Lake Forest earlier in the season and to runner up Fenwick in the state semifinals.
Congratulations to the Barbarians on a fine campaign and successful end to the 2013 season!
