A Cooper's hawk visited our back yard on evening of October 10th. The sparrows that frequent our bird feeder hid in the shrubbery as the hawk stalked about the yard in search of prey. It didn't seem to mind as I opened a window and started taking pictures less than 20 feet away. At one point he perched atop a suet cake cage on one of our feeder poles, hidden in shadow except for his face where a beam of sunlight through the leaves of the tree next to it illuminated his fiery golden eyes. Just when I thought it had given up and was about to leave it walked over to the rose bushes, flew straight up into them from the bottom and burst through the top clutching a sparrow in its claws. It was an incredible though sad sight to behold.
