An inside look at the Springfield trip.

Obama Trip
August 23, 2008

There is nothing like a free ride, especially when you are taking a ride with the Peoria Democrats. Three busses were provided by the good grace of Ret. Sen. George Shadid. Organization was key this morning as there were a limited number of seats. Unfortunately for one person over organization may have been a downfall. With the first organizer showing up at 4 am she had plenty of time to make sure things were in order. For some reason the crowds didn’t feel it was important to arrive that early. Maybe it isn’t their fault. The majority of this crowd has achieved their fourth, fifth and even sixth decade. Some like a blue haired teen and a young Bradley student were not among the standard crowd.

This writer personally found out that there were busses heading to Springfield hours before they left. Watching the news at midnight and awaking at 5 am to find a seat on the route. The ride down was fairly friendly.

Arriving in Springfield we unloaded three busses of supporters. The lines were long and the security followed the same standard one would expect to see at an airport. Persons were required to leave all bottles of water and food outside the secure area. Secret Service manned portable metal detectors and the lines were fairly efficient. Once inside during a three hour wait where the heat and thirst came to be issues. Many members of the croud did succumb to the heat, fortunately there were many hard working medical staff on hand.

Unfortuantely when setting up events that are not in comon spacing, an effort to provide viewing room and accomidations- certain paterns don't always work. Bottlenecking at water faculities and rest areas was a problem for many. Transportation of cold beverages was an issue for some people. Certain entrepreneurs found fighting the crowds to acquire mass quantities of cold bottled beverages to turn a buck turned useful.

Once in, and through and after battling the heat and crowds and the three hours the music started and the show was on. Barack Obama provided an eloquent speech. Not only did he reiterate many of his political viewpoints but he tied himself to the people though shared values and beliefs. His introduction of Senator Biden continued to relay a base of values and life struggles that many Americans could relate to.

In kind Senator Joe Biden continued to relate to core American values relating not only his experience and strength but his preserving hope in a greater America. His appreciation of shared views and the strengths that Senator Obama offers America.

All in all I believe that both candidates were extremely effective in painting their strengths and their value as future leaders of the free world.
