East Peoria girl in Peace Corp in Africa

Third World countries have problems with trash. No one collects it. Some of it is biodegradable but what isn't, plastics, are seen everywhere. Johanna Valente, an evnironmental educator for the Peace Corp, wrote a grant for a bulldozer for a land fill project in Joal, Senegal, West Africa. The donated Caterpillar machinery was delivered this summer to the mayor of Joal.

Johanna has seen water via pipeline come to her village for the first time, has started kitchen gardens, planted trees, wrote a grant for a school library, and is currently supervising its building process. Her next project is to get French language books to stock the shelves.
