On Halloween night just after sunset and while there was still a pumpkin colored glow in the sky; the new moon became visible with Venus hovering above just out of reach. If you look closely you can see the remainder of the moon in shadow. This effect is caused by the sunlight reflecting off the earth and lighting the shadowed portion of the moon. This is called "Earth Shine". If you want to see a more spectacular event look just above the western sky slightly south and just after sunset on Dec. 1, and you will see the new moon with Venus and Jupiter very close to each other.
Spectacular view of Venus and the Moon.
