The Pekin Dragon Squirt hockey team with only 45 total players in the entire Pekin youth hockey program (1 Mite, 1 Squirt and 1 Pee Wee team), competed with the elite programs from all over North America in the 10th Annual International Silver Sticks Tournament in Pelham, Ontario.
The team consists of mostly 9- and 10-year-old boys from Pekin, Chillicothe, Bloomington, Gibson City and South Pekin, but also includes two girls and one 7-year-old. Pekin qualified for the tournament after winning a regional invite only competition in Chicago in December.
The Dragon's figuring they would be outmatched and going more just for the experience shocked everyone by winning the entire tournament and their team plaque will hang in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Team members include: Brennen Begner, Zachary Cox, Tyler Dunn, Brendan Guenther, Nick Hub, Trey Ivey, Tyler Kuhn, Carson Metzler, Brenden Petty, Mitchell Riley, Jordan Stear, Madison Stear, Nadia Studnicka, Connor Taylor, and Lane Timmons
The Dragon's are coached by Corey Cox, Gregg Guenther, Shaun Ivey and Jim Dunn
The team manager is Melissa Ivey and the team scheduler is Melody Metzler
