Orca Whale Watching

Whale Watching

These pictures are taken in Canadian waters north of Friday Harbor, Washington on Aug. 31. The whales travel in pods and can be tracked by sonar by the boat captains, Two pods of whales were gathered in this area. We actually saw 40-50 whales in this outing according to our guide. The views were outstanding and to actually get to see the whales was outstanding.
Some Facts: We were told that the dorsal fins can be as big as six feet tall. The whales move close to shore to trap the salmon which is their main food source. They move as far north as Alaska and have been tracked in water near parts of California. Breaching, which is when the whales actually come out of the water, is a rare occurance, unlike Sea World, and is usually done to mainly show off.
