This is my garden/turtle sanctuary. It is home to 12 box turtles, 5 water turtles & one very large tortoise named Breezy- who weighs over 40 pounds. Except for the tortoise, these are all rescues :) There is fencing trenched 2 feet down with the bricks on top so that we don't have any escapees ;)
The outside of the sanctuary is landscaped with day lillies & orange lillies, prarie grass, sweet comfry, rose bushes, columbine, etc. The tortoise eats sweet comfry.
We are looking to expand the sanctuary to give everyone more room & possibly do a little more landscape friendly plants inside for the turtles/tortoise to munch on. We have plenty of room to expand but not plenty of resources. The tortoise grows bigger every year :) On the interior, we keep the grass long & "natural". I'm currently having a creeping charlie problem and am trying to stay on top of it. I've caught box turtles munching on it though so I'm not in a full out attack.
There is a small pond that houses the gold fish & water turtles, plus an ocassional soaking box turtle. We also have frogs, which is surprising as they have to jump over a 3 foot fence to mate & mate they do. I take a lot of pictures of various living things in the garden/sanctuary.
Visitors seem very pleased when they visit. The turtles are best viewed in early morning and after 6 in the evening. They are also out & moving around right after a rain catching worms & other bugs.
So, as you see, my garden is not just a garden. It's home to a lot of living creatures big & small. My favorite time of the year is from Easter to Halloween because that's when it all comes alive & I can sit out there watching all of the neat going on's. Also, in the Fall, around Sept., I get to watch the hatchlings hatch that are laid in June :) We also have vegetable gardens on either side & the turtles enjoy the fruits of the garden almost every day after everything begins producing.
